A recent Indie downloadable hit, Bastion, came on to the Xbox Live Arcade this
past summer. This was the first game by the new developer Supergiant Games. At the
first glance the most prevalent thing about the game appears to be the 2D
perspective and its distinctive art style. But what sets this game apart is viewing
the game in motion. The bright cartoon-like visuals with a water color touch coupled
with the game's world creation system creates a fantastic visual appearance. As the
player walks about, the landscape comes up to meet the player. For the most part,
when a person is standing still the only land visible is the land directly next to
the player. So when a player begins the move, the land they were recently standing
on falls away while more land comes up to meet the player. This system coupled with
the art style makes movement look like a puzzle piece coming together and falling apart.
